This yeast-free Apple Fritter Rings recipe requires no proofing or waiting. Homemade caramel sauce is delightful, but cinnamon and sugar can finish fried apple rings quickly.
INGREDIENTS
– 1 cup all-purpose flour– 1/4 teaspoon baking powder– 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg– 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon– 2 Tablespoons sugar– 1/4 teaspoon salt– 1 large egg– 1 1/4 cups buttermilk– 4 large apples, such as Fuji or Gala– Vegetable oil, for frying– Homemade or store-bought caramel sauce, for serving
INSTRUCTIONS
Mix flour, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, sugar, and salt in a medium basin. Whisk the egg and buttermilk in a large bowl, then stir into the flour mixture until mixed.
Step 1
Cut apples into 1/4-inch rounds. Remove the core from each apple slice and cut it into rings with cookie cutters.
Step 2
Add 3 inches of oil to a big heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. Paper towel a sheet tray.
Step 3
Dip each apple slice in the batter, shake off excess, and carefully lower it into the oil when your deep-fry thermometer reads 350°F. Add many apple slices to the oil without overcrowding.
Step 4
Flip the apple slices occasionally to brown on all sides, then use tongs to transfer them to the paper towel-lined baking sheet.
Step 5
Repeat battering and frying the remaining apple rings. Dish out caramel sauce to dip apple rings in immediately.
